A rare and important steel, wrought and cast iron grate with inlaid and engraved brass decorated panels by George Bullock (c 1777-1818) Circa 1820.

The top rail of the polished steel rectangular basket is surmounted by obelisk spikes and to the bottom with a brass fret in the form of a continuous moulding. The basket is flanked either side by oblong steel pilasters resting on steel plinths with brass mouldings’ The face of each pilaster is decorated with a brass moulded sunken panel inlaid with an engraved brass scrolling vine motif.  Both pilasters are surmounted by a stylised acroterion decorated with engraved inlaid brass tendrils. The cast iron back is surmounted  by lavish scrolling acanthus leaves and floral rosettes.

The overall design of this grate corresponds to one of the famous Wilkinson Tracings for stove grates executed by George Bullock and now in the Birmingham Museum ref. no. 1974M3.147. These are annotated ‘For Aston Hall’ and ‘The ornaments and Mouldings of Brafs’. A link to these designs is The Wilkinson Tracing
