A 19th century Italian plaster portrait bust after D. Brucciani
A 19th century Italian plaster portrait bust after D. Brucciani. The original Brucciani bust was taken from a 15th century glazed terracotta bust (now in the Musee National de la Renaissance, Chateau D’Ecouen), France, by Andrea Della Robbia, Florence 1435-1525.
Domenico Brucciani(1815-1880) originally from Lucca ran a very successful business producing casts of sculptural works from international collections including those in the South Kensington Museum (now the V & A) and British Museum and then selling them commercially from his shop at 40 Russell Street known as the Galleria delle Belle Arti. The business capitalising on the 19th century fashion of having sculptural figures in the home continued until the 1st world war when the demand for plaster casts declined.
