An early 20^th century ornamental Welsh slate fan. Circa 1880

 At the end of the 18^th century the demand for slate exploded and in their spare time the quarrymen would carve intricate and beautiful objects out of slate. This tradition carried on well into the early 20^th century and the current piece is a fine example of this kind of folk art.
