A good 19th century German bronze figure of Polyhymnia after the antique.

Signed on the base J. Walz. Circa 1880.

 J. Walz was born in Wurtemberg, Germany, and trained in Paris and the Vienna workshop of Victor Tilgner. He died in 1922.

Polyhymnia in Greek mythology was the Muse of sacred poetry, sacred hymn, dance & eloquence and often depicted in deep thought leaning on a pillar. The current bronze was copied from a 1st-2nd century roman marble figure (now in the Louvre Museum, Paris) which was restored by Agostino Penna (1728-1800) in the late 18th century for an important palace in Rome.
