A 20th century English wrought iron companion set  by Thornton & Downer comprising shovel, poker, brush and a pair of tongs with a stand resting on pad feet . The fire tools with barley twist handles are decorated with lightly tooled geometric patterns, as is the supporting stand. Circa 1910.

Bill Thornton and Charley Downer joined the Guild of Handicraft in Whitechapel set up C.R. Ashbee in 1888,. They came to Camden in 1902 and when the Guild went into liquidation in 1908 they stayed on making ornamental ironwork of high quality for architects and for direct sale, until just after the First World War. They famously didn’t speak to each other after some petty argument but this didn’t seem to impair the quality of their workmanship.
