19th Scottish pine and gesso chimneypiece

An unusual early 19th century Scottish Regency pine and gesso chimneypiece. Circa 1800.

The frieze with a concave central panel carved with a scene inspired by the love affair of Emma Hamilton and Lord Nelson. Emma Hamilton rests on an anchor waiting for Nelson’s ship to return surrounded by shells and seaweed. The two side panels each decorated with a delicate floral bouquet, the jambs with semi circular engaged shafts headed by lion masks and hanging vines. The opening is framed with a continuous shell and bead moulding.
