19th painted plaster figure of Flora by H. Hopper
The figure is signed on the back – Oct 1 H. Hopper London.
Originally designed to carry lamps this elegant pair of classical figures (See stock no. 3287A for the companion figure of Ceres) have been painted to simulate bronze giving them a more solid appearance and suiting the heavy feel of Regency interiors. Humphrey Hopper (1765 -1844) came to prominence after winning the gold medal from the Royal Academy in 1803 for the sculptural group ‘The Death of Melenger’ and became one of leading suppliers of plaster figures in the early part of the 19th century. He exhibited frequently at the Royal Academy between 1799 and 1834 including amongst his oeuvre monuments and monumental figures, busts and figures for chimneypieces, occasionally executed in marble.
